Philip Morris USA

David Sylvia serves as director, communications in the Communications & Government Affairs department at Philip Morris USA. In this role, Sylvia is responsible for leading the development of the Company’s corporate brand, including the development of the positioning platform and strategies for driving this positioning through all of its communications and activities.

Prior to joining Philip Morris USA, Sylvia worked at Altria Group, the parent company of PMUSA. While working at Altria, in the role of director, external communications, he was responsible for developing the external communications strategy and plans, along with the execution of both the paid and earned components of the external communications plan. He joined Altria in 1999 as director, public policy and research in the Issues Management department. In April 2001, he was appointed director, global public opinion and trend research in the Strategy and Social Responsibility Department. In this capacity, he played a pivotal role in the management and implementation of opinion research at the Company.

Prior to joining the Altria family of companies, Sylvia worked for KRC Research & Consulting. During his tenure at KRC, he worked with many Fortune 100 companies as a research consultant. His clients included Philip Morris, Pfizer, and various trade organizations. Sylvia has also worked for DYG, Inc., Cambridge Reports/Research International, and Porter Novelli Worldwide.

A member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, Sylvia has a master's of arts in political science and opinion research from the University of Connecticut. He also has a B.A. in political science from Providence College. Sylvia currently lives in Richmond, VA with his wife and four children.
